With Amazon’s latest bid to open three new UK distribution centres, courier services nationwide are likely to see a noticeable increase in business (especially the good ones!). The presence-boosting distribution centres are set to create over 2,000 new jobs and a further 3,000 temporary positions to deal with the famous Christmas rush. The announcement came following the opening of a 450,000 sq ft order fulfilment centre in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.
The company currently has an existing network of warehouses in Milton Keynes, Doncaster, Peterborough, Dunfermline, Staffordshire and Swansea, and now with three new centres in the UK, Amazon’s presence is sure to be bigger than ever.
Managing Director of Amazon UK Christopher North told how he was “delighted” to announce that Amazon is able to provide thousands more jobs on the lead up to 2014. He added “Our recruitment team has been exceptionally busy recently hiring hundreds of employees at the Hemel Hempstead fulfilment centre and they will certainly be busy over the next couple of years as we continue to expand to provide customers with the best possible experience.”
The bid attracted attention from Prime Minister David Cameron who said the announcement serves as a reminder that Britain is capable of providing the necessary infrastructure and skills to attract substantial interest and investment from leading companies and corporate organisations.
