Could convicted drink drivers have to resit tests?

UK roads are identified among the safest across Europe. The current drinking limit stands at 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. This has stayed at this level since the breathalyser test became customary in 1967. However, cases of drink driving are still a problem.

If a person is found in charge of a vehicle while above the legal limit this could lead to up to 3 months imprisonment, fines and a possible ban. If a person attempts to drive when above the legal limit the consequences are more profound. A person could face up to 6-month imprisonment, a fine and at least a 1-year driving ban.

Road Safety Authority’s (RSA) chief executive Moyagh Murdock states that recent figures indicate the significant contribution that alcohol plays in the deaths of young drivers. She says that part of the reason this occurs so extensively is the lack of the “fear factor”. This means that those who had a few drinks on a night out aren’t fazed by existing deterrents.

She explains that drink driving is a major issue and new ways to tackle it were under examination. New plans are being looked into for the Department Of Transport by the RSA that could lead to drink drivers having to resit their driving test to get back on the road. What are your thoughts; will this help put a stop to drink driving?
