The Speed Couriers Summer Driving Checklist: Part 1

It’s no secret that summer is now in full swing, and the UK has seen a generous amount of sun with only the odd spot of rain here and there to keep the grass green!

Summer is the perfect time to pack up and head out on a road trip with friends and family, and with the UK having such a huge range of entertaining destinations and beautiful scenery, we thought we’d put a two-part list of useful tips together to help you enjoy your summer road trip even more!

Plan Ahead

One of the best ways to cut down on stress while on lengthy road journeys is to plan ahead. Even if you don’t end up sticking with your original plan, it can certainly be worth planning a route to take across the country, planning roughly how much you can spend each day and planning activities that you can stop and do along the way.

While modern-day Sat Nav systems can eliminate the need for an extensive route plan, finding the best route beforehand (be it from recommendations or research) can often help you avoid busy routes that the Sat Nav would direct you towards.

Check Your Vehicle’s Fluids

The summer months can be a little more strenuous on your car, and to ensure your vehicle has everything it needs to make a safe journey it’s a good idea to thoroughly check its fluid levels.

Be sure to check levels such as engine oil, windscreen washer fluid, engine coolant and of course, fuel.

Checking Tyres

Checking the condition and tread depth of your vehicle’s tyres is always a good idea before heading out on a lengthy car journey. . This really quick check may save you from breaking down or worse, a crash. You also need to check that you have a roadworthy spare wheel in your car in case of an emergency.

Not only can an unsafe tyre cause an accident, if you are found to be driving with un-roadworthy tyres you could be fined a hefty £2500 per tyre and 3 points on your licence.

Prepare Car Games

If you have ever travelled with young children on a lengthy car journey in the past, you’ll likely know that they can often become bored and then soon after, agitated. Taking some games along for the journey is a quick and simple solution to this problem, and will certainly help entertain a frustrated child.

Small hand-held games consoles or tablets are a great way of taking some fun interactive games along that don’t require charge for several hours.

So there we have a handful of quick and simple tips to help you prepare for a lengthy summer car journey.
